Local college notebook: Middle grad helps La Salle top Temple in soccer

La Salle University freshman midfielder Austin Johnson (Middle Township) scored the only goal of the game in the second overtime Friday to give the Explorers men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Temple University. It was La Salle's first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season.

Johnson scored after a headed pass from Ryan Sepe with 2 minutes, 31 seconds left in the second overtime. It was third goal of the season for Johnson, who was named the Atlantic-10 men's soccer Rookie of the Week. It was the second time this fall that he has earned that honor.

The Explorers improved to 5-9-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the Atlantic-10 Conference.

Freshman goalie Andrew D'Ottavi (Ocean City) made four saves to earn the shutout for Saint Joseph's as it defeated Fordham 1-0 on Oct. 12.

Football: Kean University free safety Mike Mancini (Lacey Township) had a team-high 12 tackles and a sack for a loss of 9 yards as the Cougars beat visiting Rowan University 23-20 in overtime Saturday.

William Paterson University senior linebacker Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Township) had seven tackles and two forced fumbles (one recovered) as the Pioneers beat host Buffalo State 33-7 on Saturday.

Swimming: Rowan University divers Mark Balesteri (Egg Harbor Township) and Samantha Rottkamp (Cumberland Regional) each won the New Jersey Athletic Conference Diver of the Week honors. Balesteri won the NJAC men's award for the second straight week by winning the three-meter dive in the Profs' 140.5-101.5 loss to Division I Drexel University on Saturday. Rottkamp received the NJAC women's honor by placing second in both the one-meter and three-meter dives in the Rowan women's team's 150-89 to Drexel.

Also in the Drexel men's meet, Steve Tucker (Sacred Heart) was on the Rowan medley relay team, which finished second, and Michael Brooks (Holy Spirit) was part of the Profs' 400 freestyle relay team, which also placed second. Tucker was second in the 50-yard freestyle. Zach Castelli (Atlantic City) was second in one-meter and three-meter diving. In the women's meet, Stacey Rahter (Mainland) won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

The Rowan men's and women's teams both beat visiting Salisbury University last Tuesday. Tucker won the 100 butterfly and was on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams as the Profs men won 141-112. Brooks was second in the 200 freestyle. The Rowan women won 140-114 and Rahter won the 100 butterly and was on the winning 200 medley relay team. Teresa Stearns (Holy Spirit) was second in the 50 freestyle.

TCNJ's Traci Hofer (Millville) won the 200-yard backstroke and was on two victorious relay teams as the Lions women's team beat Ramapo 188-61 last Tuesday. Hofer had two relay wins in a 150-112 win at Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday.

Franklin & Marshall College's Laura Bassford (Absegami) won the 200 butterfly as the F&M women's team lost to Johns Hopkins University 148-114.

Rowing: San Diego State University freshman Paige Funk (Holy Spirit) was the stroke of the freshman Novice "A" crew that won at the Newport Beach Autumn Rowing Festival.

University of Rhode Island freshman Anne Edwards (Mainland Regional) was in the women's varsity eight that placed 33rd out of 55 teams at the Princeton 3-Mile Chase on Oct. 25.

Lafayette College senior Ashley Starodub (Lacey Township) was in seat-5 of the women's eight boat that finished second at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Oct. 24.

The Old Dominion University women's freshman "A" boat, with stroke Kiersten Stephens (Ocean City), 6-seat Shelby Favre (Holy Spirit), bow Kelly McHale (Holy Spirit) and coxswain Allison Giegerich (Holy Spirit), finished second to the ODU women's varsity eight at the Head of the Lafayette Regatta. Eight boats were in the race.

Sprint football: Sophomore Todd Busler (Atlantic City) threw for 271 yards and four touchdown passes for the University of Pennsylvania as it defeated Princeton in the final game of the season. Busler finished the season with 1,682 passing yards, eclipsing the old mark by 393.

Field hockey: Senior midfielder Jenna Lombardo (Southern Regional) assisted on the game-winning goal as Rowan beat Lynchburg 2-1 in overtime Saturday. Profs' goalie Lisa Apt (Oakcrest) made one save in the win.

Montclair State's Justine DiPaolo (Lacey Township) earned NJAC offensive player of the week after tallying seven points on two goals and three assists in two victories..

Women's cross country: Jena Peacock (Our Lady of Mercy Academy) earned NJAC runner of the week honors for the fifth time this year after winning the individual title at the conference championship race at Stockton on Saturday.

Men's cross country: Ramapo College junior Clifton Shambry (Millville) took 16th place at the NJAC Championship race Saturday, finishing in 27 minutes, 54.28 seconds.

Boston College's Mike Keebler (Holy Spirit) placed fifth on his team in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. Keebler finished the 8K race in 26:01.7.
