Race review: Truex got off to a strong start at Talladega in the car that he won the pole at the Daytona 500 in. He moved up from 23rd to 11th in the first four laps, and got to ninth place by lap 34. After a pit-road speeding penalty put him down a lap, he got it back on a caution flag on lap 50.
He worked his way back up to eighth when another caution was called on lap 137 and gained a spot during the yellow-flag pit stop. He had the lead for one lap on lap 146.
When Ryan Newman's crash on lap 184 brought out another caution, Truex pitted for fuel and saw many of the leaders start to run out of gas, lifting him back into the top 10 with a green-white-checkered finish coming. But he got caught up in a multi-car crash on the final lap that relegated him to a 31st-place finish.
