Mike Trout visits with the Anaheim Angels on Thursday. Trout, the Millville High School graduate taken 25th overall in the draft last month, was in California to sign a contract with a reported $1.21 million bonus. The team’s Web site (losangeles.angels.mlb.com) reported he hit a few balls out of Angels Stadium during batting practice. Angels manager Mike Scioscia ‘was yelling at me because I was watching them as they went out,’ Trout joked. (Press photo by Rose Palmisano of Orange County Register)
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Thursday was a big day for Mike Trout, one of the Los Angeles Angels' two first-round draft picks in last month's first-year player draft.
Early in the day Trout signed a contract that included a $1.21 million bonus. In the afternoon he took batting practice at Angel Stadium and then posed for pictures in the dugout with Vladimir Guerrero.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet," said Trout, the 25th overall pick. "It's a great program, great organization and I'm glad to be with them."
Trout, who hit a couple of balls over the wall during batting practice, hit .531 with a New Jersey-record 18 home runs this season for Millville High School. He will report to the Angels' Arizona Summer League team today.
A 17-year-old outfielder with the potential to be a five-tool player - he's run the 60-yard dash in 6.5 seconds - Trout said he jokingly warned Torii Hunter that he was after his job.
"I'm going to try to get up here as quick as I can," he said.
