The Cumberland County College women's basketball team is ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll for its first national ranking.
The Dukes are 5-0, the best start in program history, and have won each game by 11 or more points.
"This is the best team that Cumberland has ever had, bottom line," coach Steven Kaneshiki said. "We've just got a lot of talent."
The team is made up of eight freshmen and three sophomores, including local high school standouts Sarah Gibbs (Ocean City), Nicole Conroy (Sacred Heart) and Charity Harris (Vineland). Seven players average seven points or more per game.
"It just shows that everyone is playing well, and they're very unselfish," Kaneshiki said.
"They're so much fun to watch, so much fun to coach. I'm very lucky right now."
The Dukes, who finished 5-18 last season, have one goal - to get above .500 overall.
"If we achieve the first goal, then we can readjust our goals and add a new one," he said. "For right now, I don't want to put any expectations on them. I just want them to play hard every day."
Cumberland County College will host Garden State Athletic Conference opponent Atlantic Cape Community College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
