Atlantic City bantamweight boxer Qa'id Muhammad scored a third-round knockout over Steven Johnson of St. Joseph, Mo., on Wednesday at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.

The 23-year-old Muham-mad scored the second knockdown of the fight in round three, and the end came at 1 minute, 24 seconds.

Muhammad set up Johnson with body shots in the third round and scored the final knockdown with a right to the head. Muhammad also knocked his man down in the first round with a straight right.

Muhammad (7-0, 6 KOs) weighed 116.5 pounds, and Johnson (7-5, 4 KOs) was 118.2. The fight was originally scheduled for six rounds and was shortened to a four-rounder.

"I definitely felt pretty sharp," Muhammad said. "He (Johnson) was definitely not a runner. He was trying to potshot and counter me.

"I was two pounds over my actual weight class.

"I had to fight an opponent a little bigger in order to be on the card, but it wasn't really a problem.

"I started hitting him with rights to the body and he started to look for it. His head was open and that's when I landed the right hand."

Abdur Rahim Muhammad, Qa'id's father, trainer and co-manager with Vito Mielnicki, said that Qa'id's next fight will be May 12 in Mississippi. Qa'id Muhammad's previous fight was last July 16.

"I wasn't concerned at all about how long it's been," said Abdur Rahim Muhammad. "Qa'id is always ready to fight. He looked as strong and sharp as ever."
