Revel has decided to add the Atlantic City International Triathlon to its sports menu this year.

The Atlantic City casino resort announced Tuesdsay that it has become the title sponsor for the event, which will be held for the third time on Sunday, Sept. 15.

"Today's announcement underscores Revel's commitment to Atlantic City, and creating and supporting special events for the resort," Darlene Monzo, Revel's senior vice-president of marketing, said in a statement. "We are very excited to partner with (the triathlon) and (race organizer) DelMoSports teams in order to spread the message of all Revel and the resort have to offer to this growing new market of visitors."

In addition to the Atlantic City International Triathlon, the DelMoSports company will also stage the inaugural Escape the Cape Triathlon on June 2 in Lower Township and the 10th Tri/Run the Wildwoods Triathlon and 5K Run on Aug. 17.

Both the Escape the Cape and Atlantic City triathlons will feature a new event called an Aquabike which features a 1-mile swim and 20-mile bike with no run.

"It's an orthopedic fact that we will all be aquabikers some day," DelMoSports founder and CEO Steve Del Monte said Tuesday in a phone interview. "Our knees are all gonna go, but we still want to compete and this gives us that opportunity. Aquabike is becoming very popular among triathletes."

The third annual Atlantic City International Triathlon will also feature an international distance race consisting of a one-mile swim in the bay, a 20-mile bike on the Atlantic City Expressway and a 10-kilometer run on the boardwalk. A sprint distance event will include a quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike and 5K run.

The race again will be held in conjunction with the Atlantic City Seafood Festival taking place that weekend at Bader Field. Revel will be offering special room rates for athletes and spectators the weekend of the race.

"Last year, the Atlantic City International Triathlon experienced a 400 percent growth and we've already had another 100 percent growth this year," Del Monte said. "We're expecting over 2,000 participants and we're extremely happy that we've partnered with a premier brand like Revel. Triathletes represent the perfect demographic for them."

The Escape the Cape Triathlon, which will begin with competitors jumping off the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to start the swim, is a sellout. All 1,000 slots have been filled, Del Monte said.
