Margate beat host Egg Harbor City 5-0 Tuesday to clinch their Atlantic County Baseball League quarterfinal series 2-0. Margate has advanced to the semifinals 35 of the last 36 years. Margate, which won its 16th straight game, is 24-2. EHC finished at 4-22.
Margate scored five runs in the fifth inning, the big hit being Jason Law's three-run homer. Also in the inning, Pat Goodwin singled in Ross Costello, and Eric Fitzgerald hit a sacrifice fly which scored Doug Hiltner.
Winning pitcher Jared Lenko (7-1) went the distance and gave up six hits, struck out nine and walked one. For Egg Harbor Ctiy, John Husta had two hits. EHC pitcher Josh Wagner held Margate scoreless on three hits for four innings.
Margate will host an ACBL semifinal game at 7 p.m. Monday.
Absecon 7, This N That Uniforms 4: Absecon (21-5) won its 13th straight game and clinched the quarterfinal series 2-0 in Egg Harbor Township. C.J. Wallowitch was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Absecon, and Matt Allen had two RBIs. Mike Hampton and Kevin Cicali each added RBIs. Winning pitcher Mike Isgro went six innings and struck out 11. At the plate, Isgro was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run. For This N That, Jeff Attenbraun was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run.
Absecon will host a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Monday.
Ventnor 1, Ocean City 0: Ventnor's Junior Mejia tripled in the bottom of the sixth inning, and scored on a delayed steal. Juan Mejia, Junior's brother, stole second and drew the throw, and Junior Mejia scored.
The best-of-three series is tied at 1-1. The deciding game is at 7 tonight in Ocean City.
Ventnor's Brett Uhing pitched a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks. Uhing also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Ocean City pitcher Justin Bird went six innings and allowed seven hits, with three strikeouts.
Hammonton 4, Team Univers 3: Hammonton evened their quarterfinal series at 1-1. Matt Gabrielski hit a two-run homer for Hammonton, and winning pitcher Brad Mountain went the distance, with four strikeouts. For Team Univers, AJ Scibilia and Chris Caprio had two hits apiece, and Mike Earling drove in a run.
The third and deciding game in the series is at 7 tonight at Hammonton Lake Park.
