St. Augustine Prep brought a lot of intensity to its South Jersey Non-Public A boys basketball quarterfinal game with Camden Catholic on Friday night in Buena Vista Township.
The second-seeded Hermits built a quick lead and went on to beat the seventh-seeded Fighting Irish 48-43.
St. Augustine will host No. 3 seed Paul VI on Monday at 6 p.m. in a sectional semifinal game.
The Hermits, ranked ninth in The Press Elite 11, raced out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Fighting Irish battled back and trailed 20-19 at halftime The Irish missed some opportunities to take the lead, holding the ball in the final minutes of both the first and second quarters, but where unable to convert on those possessions.
The Hermits maintained their intensity in the second half and began to pull away.
"I thought we had a good run early," Hermits coach Paul Rodio said after the game on an SNJToday.com webcast. "The difference was the three minutes in the third quarter. After that, we made them chase us a little bit and make them go man and force them to do things they don't like to do when we were able to do that I think we were in better shape."
Defense was a big factor for the Hermits. Pressing man-to-man with the Irish and being aggressive at the rim helped St/ Augustine hold off Camden Catholic.
"We dont want the season to end," said Hermits forward Brian Seward, who was a key defensive presence for the Hermits. "We wanted to practice on Monday and get a piece of Paul VI."
Sophomore Sa'eed Nelson also was a big factor for the Hermits. He scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.
"I've had a lot of faith in him (Sa'eed)," Rodio said. "When you make the moves and some of things he's done, you don't question it."
