Unbeaten Somers Point middleweight Patrick Majewski is inching closer to a world championship fight.

He will try to take another step tonight, when he faces Colombian native Jose Miguel Torres in a 10-round bout at Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Conn.

Majewski (17-0, 11 KOs), a native of Radom, Poland, moved to South Jersey in 2003 to pursue a boxing career and has gradually improved to the point where he is now ranked No. 7 by the World Boxing Organization. He is vying to become the first local fighter to win a world title since the late Leavander Johnson earned the IBF lightweight crown in 2005.

Majewski is coming off a 10-round, unanimous decision over Marcus Upshaw on June 6 in Mississippi that gave him the WBO's NABO regional title. He will be defending that belt tonight, as well as competing for the vacant NABF title.

Torres (22-5, 19 KOs) is pinch-hitting for another Colombian fighter. Majewski was supposed to fight Dionisio Miranda (21-7-2, 18 KOs), but Miranda could not obtain a visa and was forced to withdraw two weeks ago.

The fight will be televised on Azteca America.
