Rowan University senior pitcher Steven Melchiorre (Hammonton) was chosen to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III All-State first team Thursday. Melchiorre went 7-3 with a 2.77 ERA this season. In a team-high 81 innings, he struck out 81.

Cecil College's Ryan Irwin (Absegami) went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs in an 8-5 victory over Dundalk in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XX Final.

Gloucester Community College won the NJCAA Division III Region XIX championship and will play in the Division III Junior College World Series beginning Saturday. Brett Uhing (Atlantic City) and Kevin Mitchell (Mainland Regional) play for the Roadrunners.


Rowan senior Stephanie Labas (Millville) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America third team. Labas batted .337 with 55 hits, 30 runs, 45 RBIs and a school-record 12 home runs. At first base, she had a .991 fielding percentage.

Track and field

Rowan senior Demetrius Rooks (Absegami) won the 400-meter hurdles at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships Friday in 51.79 seconds. His accomplishment earned him New Jersey Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week honors Monday.

Monmouth University senior Ford Palmer (Absegami) won the school's Male Athlete of the Year award.
