A look at the Phillies as opening day nears. The Phillies began the 2013 season at 7:10 p.m. Monday at the Atlanta Braves.
The Phillies' bullpen should be one of the team's strengths.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon saved 38 games and struck out 92 batters in 70 innings last season.
The Phillies signed Mike Adams in the offseason to pitch the eighth inning. He has a career 2.28 ERA in eight seasons.
The addition of Adams should improve the rest of the bullpen. For instance, left-hander Antonio Bastardo no longer will have to face as many right-handed batters. He doesn't have to pitch the eighth inning, so he can be used primarily against left-handed hitters. The Phillies also feature several other promising young relievers, including Phillipe Aumont.
