The St. Augustine Prep varsity eight and the Holy Spirit and Absegami girls varsity eights qualified for today's semifinals at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Regatta on Friday on the Cooper River in Camden County.
The semifinals begin at 8 a.m., and championship races in 36 categories start at 1 p.m.
St. Augustine won its 1,500-meter preliminary heat in 4 minutes, 27.82 seconds. In girls varsity eights, Holy Spirit (5:10.37) and Absegami (5:17.95) both advanced by finishing second in separate heats. The Absegami boys varsity eight finished fourth in a repechage (second chance) race and was eliminated. The Atlantic City girls varsity eight was sixth in its repechage and was also eliminated. The Holy Spirit and Atlantic City boys varsity eights placed fifth and sixth, respectively in the same heat, and failed to advance.
The Ocean City boys freshman eight, a winner last week at the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, won its preliminary heat in 4:43.02.
Other boys heat winners were the Oakcrest junior four, the St. Augustine lightweight eight and the Holy Spirit junior eight. Girls crews which won heats were the Mainland Regional varsity four and junior eight, the Oakcrest junior eight and lightweight four, and the Holy Spirit girls freshman eight.
Also advancing to the girls semifinals were the Egg Harbor Township lightweight four, varsity four and junior four, the Holy Spirit junior eight and second eight, and the Absegami second eight.
Other boys crews which made the semifinals were the Ocean City lightweight four and junior four, the St. Augustine second eight and freshman eight, and the EHT lightweight four.
The EHT boys varsity four was second in a repechage race to make the semifinals. The Vineland boys varsity four had an oar lock break just past the midway point of its heat. With three rowers, the Fighting Clan finished sixth and failed to advance.
