Winning pitcher Anthony Lopez went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs to lead Cumberland County to a a 4-3 victory over Laredo, Texas, on Saturday at the Big League World Series in Easley, S.C.
Lopez, a Buena Regional High School graduate, went the seven-inning distance and gave up five hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
Cumberland County, which improved to 1-2 at the tournament, scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win it after Laredo had gotten two runs to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the inning. Cumberland County is the East representative. Laredo represents the Southwest.
Lopez leads the 11-team tournament with a .636 average. The Big League World Series includes a five-team international pool and a six-team United States pool.
Also for Cumberland, catcher Jared Corniell, another Buena Regional player, went 3-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Second baseman Vaughn Watson, a Vineland graduate, added two hits and a run.
First baseman Daron Moore and center fielder Kenny Dunns, both Millville graduates, had one hit apiece, Shorstop Aaron Cox, also a Millville gradaute, scored a run. Watson, Cox and Moore turned a 4-6-3 double play.
Cumberland County’s next game is Monday.
