The new guys

Tackle Demetress Bell handled himself well in the one-on-one drills against defensive end Trent Cole but also jumped offsides on the first play of the 11-on-11 scrimmage.

Rookie defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, their first-round draft pick, lined up with the second-team defense in the scrimmage. Surprisingly, veteran Derek Landri replaced injured Mike Patterson with the starters.

Quarterback Trent Edwards got only one rep during the scrimmage. He completed a short pass to fullback Jeremy Stewart over the middle.

Position analysis: Quarterback

Returning players: Michael Vick (starter), Mike Kafka

Newcomers: Edwards (free agent), Nick Foles (draft pick)

Outlook: The Eagles hope that Vick will take President Barack Obama's advice and slide more at the end of runs to avoid the kinds of injuries that have sidelined him the last two seasons. Kafka, entering his third season, was sharp in the offseason minicamps and has the inside track to be the top backup. That leaves Edwards to vie with Foles, a third-round draft pick, for the No. 3 job. Edwards could wind up on another team if he has a solid preseason.

If the season started today

Clay Harbor would be the starting tight end. Brent Celek did not practice Friday after suffering a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Thursday's brief workout. Celek and coach Andy Reid indicated the injury was not serious, however, and he is expected to miss only a few days.

Play of the day

Vick drew a standing ovation from the fans in the afternoon session when he dropped into a slide during a drill with no defense on the field.

What they're saying

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, who attended practice and caught a pass from Vick afterward: "I was really nervous, especially when you have (Eagles wide receiver) DeSean Jackson yelling, 'Don't drop it!' just as the ball's coming at you. I guarantee if I put these guys behind the wheel of a race car, they'd be pretty nervous, too."

Bumps and bruises

Jackson got sick during the afternoon session, which was conducted in searing heat. Celek was the only available player who did not practice Friday. Patterson (brain surgery) and tackle Jason Peters (torn Achilles' tendon) will miss the entire training camp. Safety Colt Anderson (knee surgery) may also sit out the entire camp.

Today at camp

The Eagles will hold a walkthrough at 8:15 a.m. and a full practice at 2:45 p.m. Todd Herremans, center Jason Kelce and the rest of the offensive line will sign autographs following the afternoon practice.
