The Philadelphia Eagles revamped their linebacker corps Monday by claiming Najee Goode off waivers from Tampa Bay and releasing Emmanuel Acho.
Goode, who is 6-foot and 244 pounds, was a fifth-round draft pick of Tampa Bay in 2012 out of the University of West Virginia. He appeared in three games for the Buccaneers last season but did not post any statistics. The 24-year-old will join Casey Matthews and undrafted rookie Jake Knott as a backup inside linebacker to starters Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans in the Eagles' new 3-4 defense.
The move was surprising, considering Acho had enjoyed a solid preseason and training camp for the Eagles. Acho, who was acquired in an offseason trade with Cleveland in which running back Dion Lewis was sent to the Browns, had a huge game in last week's preseason finale against the New York Jets. He made 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Acho missed all of last season with Cleveland because of a leg injury.
Goode also played well in the preseason for the Bucs, returning an interception for a touchdown.
If Acho clears waivers, look for him to join the Eagles' practice squad today. They had three openings on the eight-member unit after signing former San Francisco defensive back Trenton Robinson on Monday.
Robinson became the fifth player to join the practice squad, joining tackle Michael Bamiro, linebacker Travis Long, wide receiver Greg Salas and running back Matthew Tucker.
Robinson, who is 5-foot-9 and 193 pounds, was the 49ers' sixth-round draft pick last season out of Michigan State. He appeared in three games for the Niners as a rookie. Robinson is listed as a safety but is also capable of playing cornerback.
In other news, tight end Clay Harbor, linebacker Chris McCoy and Adrian Robinson, and wide receiver Russell Shepard were all claimed off waivers by other teams after being released by the Eagles over the weekend.
Harbor, who played four seasons for the Eagles, and McCoy are both headed to Jacksonville. Shepard, who was a candidate for the Eagles' practice squad, was claimed by Tampa Bay. Robinson, whom the Eagles acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh two weeks ago for running back Felix Jones, is going to Denver.
