Egg Harbor Township, Hammonton prepare for S.J. title games
The Egg Harbor Township and Hammonton high school football teams will play for South Jersey titles this weekend. Hammonton (10-1) hosts Timber Creek (9-2) at 7 p.m. Friday for the Group III title. EHT (11-0) travels to Cherokee (10-1) for the Group IV championship 1 p.m. Saturday. Each day this week, we'll take a look at some of the key matchups from each game.
Timber Creek running back Nahjee Gibson vs. Hammonton defense
Gibson is headed to Temple University and is one of the top backs in southern New Jersey. He has rushed for 1,430 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. The Blue Devils have yet to allow a point in the postseason. Defensive end Ian Evans is headed to Maryland. Antonio Rodriguez and Josh Baez are standout linebackers.
EHT quarterback Scott Miller vs. Cherokee defense
Cherokee is a physical defense. The Chiefs held Eastern to 67 yards of offense and four first downs in their 14-3 South Jersey Group IV quarterfinal win. Cherokee forced key turnovers in a 30-21 semifinal win over Williamstown.
Miller sparks Egg Harbor Township with his legs and arm. If he throws it well Saturday, it should loosen up the Cherokee defense for the EHT running game. Miller has complete 64-of-107 passes for 1,010 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
