The Mainland Regional High School field hockey team upset Ocean City 2-1 on Friday, handing the Red Raiders their first Cape-Atlantic League loss since 2007. Mainland junior forwards Vanessa Pagliei and Rachel Rubinstein scored goals within one minute of each other in the first half, and the host Mustangs kept the lead.

Ocean City, the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference champion for 16 straight years, last lost a CAL game on Sept. 19, 2007, 3-2 to Absegami. According to Mainland field hockey historian Bill Siteman, Mainland's win was only its third victory over O.C., the last being 3-2 on Nov. 5, 1993.

"It's absolutely awesome to win," Mainland coach Jill Hatz said. "We weren't shocked when we scored, but we were excited. We went in playing hard and were strong in the circle and getting opportunities. Everyone on the team gave 110 percent."

Pagliei opened the scoring with 8 minutes, 23 seconds left left in the half, after passes from Sydney Losco and Ashley Albright. Rubenstein added the second goal 55 seconds later, after passes from Pagliei and Kailey Stangle. Ocean City's April Stein cut the lead to 2-1 at 6:20 before halftime. Mainland goalie Natalie Geary made 19 saves, including 10 in the first half.

"Geary was our rock star today," Hatz said. "She made huge saves. Both teams played very good defense in the second half."
