Today is another first for seniors of the Cedar Creek High School football team.
Cedar Creek opened in 2010.
The seniors are the first class in Cedar Creek history. They played the first varsity football game in school history. They got the school's first win.
Today, they play in the school's first playoff football game. Cedar Creek hosts Cinnaminson at 1 p.m.
Cedar Creek is undefeated and features talented skill position players few local schools can match. Quarterback Damon Mitchell has verbally committed to attend Georgia Tech. Running back Gary Melton has scored 10 touchdowns in the last three games.
Cinnaminson also features talent at the skill positions in running backs Marty McDonald and Tom Donnelly.
Key players for Cinnaminson: Nick Thevanayagan, QB; Marty McDonald, FB/LB; Xavier Wilson, RB; Tom Donnelly, RB/S; Cole Pewor, CB/WR.
Key players for Cedar Creek: Damon Mitchell, QB/DB, 15 touchdown passes and 13 touchdown runs; Gary Melton, RB, 13 touchdown runs and six touchdown catches; Nolan Seward, WR, six touchdown catches; Ahmir Mitchell, DB/WR; Caleb Graves, WR/DB.
Keys to victory: Cedar Creek has gotten off to quick starts in recent games. Another fast start will serve the Pirates well today and discourage any upset thoughts Cinnaminson has. As it has done all season, Cedar Creek will rely on Mitchell. He has the ability to hurt defenses with his running and passing.
Who: Seventh-seeded Cinnaminson (5-3) vs. second-seeded Cedar Creek (8-0)
When/where: 1 p.m. today at Cedar Creek, Egg Harbor City
What's next: Winner advances to the semifinals the weekend of Nov. 30 against No. 3 Willingboro.
