The Hammonton and Timber Creek high school football teams don't schedule games against each other before the season starts.
They might as well though.
The two schools will meet for the third time in four years today when they play in a South Jersey Group IV quarterfinal. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Timber Creek.
All those meetings have been in the postseason. Timber Creek beat the Blue Devils 33-7 in last year's South Jersey Group III final. Hammonton beat Timber Creek 23-17 in the 2009 final.
Timber Creek (6-2) is the top seed and No. 4 in The Press Elite 11. The Chargers feature numerous NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision recruits, including defensive tackle Greg Webb (North Carolina) and linebacker Myles Nash (Rutgers).
Meanwhile, Hammonton, a perennial power, has struggled recently, losing three of its last four games.
Key players for Hammonton: David Williams (above), RB, 11 touchdowns; Dominic Williams, RB/DB; Christian Mortellite, QB, 10 touchdown passes; Dylan Rosu, LB/RB
Key players for Timber Creek: Greg Webb, DT; Bryce Shade, RB/QB, 45 carries for 480 yards; Khalil Pierce, RB, 81 carries for 750 yards; Zaire Williams, RB, 74 carries for 695 yards; Dajaun Drennon, DE, nine sacks; Myles Nash, DL, eight sacks; Taliq Chambers, LB, 67 tackles.
Keys to victory: Timber Creek could be as talented as any public school team in the state. But Hammonton has averaged 26.6 points against a tough schedule. Blue Devils must eliminate turnovers and control the football as much as possible.
