The Holy Spirit High School girls basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter but its comeback fell just short Saturday night.

Council Rock South (Pa.) beat the Spartans 48-47 in a Boardwalk Cup bracket semifinal during the Boardwalk Basketball Classic at Wildwoods Convention Center in Wildwood.

The Spartans trailed by eight at the start of the third quarter. They outscored Council Rock by seven in the fourth quarter.

Joana Persiano led Spirit, No. 5 in The Press' Elite 11, with 20 points. She was 4-for-10 from beyond the arc. Tenisha Mobley added 14 points.

Chelsea Allen (12 points, seven points) and Alex Wheatley (11 points, seven rebounds) sparked Council Rock.

The Classic is billed as the nation's largest coed high school basketball tournament. The event runs until Thursday and features 78 teams.

Jacqui Thompson scored 11 points to lead St. Basil Academy in the Boardwalk Cup semifinal. Jessica Martinez had eight points for Williamstown.

Chelsea Grover led Seneca with 17 points and 15 rebounds, and teammate Brittany Snow added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles had a big edge on the foul line, hitting 15-of-27 while Mainland was 3-for-6.

Keelin McGee had five points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Mustangs, and Jessica Mann added five points, three rebounds and three steals.

Seneca plays Middle Township at 4 p.m. today for the John Carlson Memorial bracket championship.

Ashley Giedemann had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Washington Township in a Mayor's Cup bracket semifinal. Kelly McGarry led Lower Moreland with 14 points.

Central Bucks East (Pa.) 31

Lauren Ruhl sank 8-of-14 shots and scored 20 points for the winners. Liz Martin had seven points and eight rebounds for Central Bucks East.

Southern led 21-11 at halftime, but host Jackson outscored the Rams 32-19 in the second half. Caitlyn Testa scored nine of her 10 points in the fourth quarter for the winners.

Southern's Kristen Sharkey led all scorers with 24 points and Avery Hodgson added 11.

Southern meets Manchester Township at 4:15 p.m. today in a WOBM Tournament game at the Ritacco Center in Toms River.
