HONOLULU - Organizers in Hawaii are preparing for the possibility that a rare big wave surfing contest - known as "The Eddie" - will go ahead on Oahu's North Shore.

The contest is only called when waves reach heights of at least 20 feet. It was last held in December 2009.

The weather forecast calls for at least 20-foot surf on Thursday at Waimea Bay, where the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is held. The event pays tribute to Aikau, a legendary Hawaiian surfer who died in 1978.

Organizers are expected to decide Thursday morning whether they'll go ahead with the contest. The event has been held just eight times since it was founded in 1984.
