The Lacey Township High School football team survived to beat Toms River East 45-42 in a shootout Saturday afternoon.

Lacey Township head coach Lou Vircillo said that East changed up its game plan against the Lions and it nearly worked. The "power football" led to Matt Gudzak scoring five rushing touchdowns for East.

A second quarter field goal turned out to be a difference-maker in the game.

Sophomore kicker Pat Davis nailed a 41-yard field in the second that gave Lacey a 24-14 lead at the time. He also went 5-for-6 in extra points.

"We have a younger defense and we also had injuries that added to the problem," Vircillo said.

Lacey tied the game up 7-7 in the first thanks to the first of two touchdown runs by Chris Jensen. Quarterback Tom Kelly then threw a pair of touchdown passes to Conor Davies for 35 yards and Christian Tutela for 10 yards respectively to make it a 21-7 game.

Kelly added a third touchdown pass to Mike Bocchini toward the end of the first half.

In the fourth quarter, East took the lead on Gudzak's fourth touchdown run of the game, a 10-yard score to make it 35-31.

Tutela gave the Lions the lead right back, scoring on a pair of touchdown runs from 42 and 32 yards out, respectively, to give Lacey a 45-35 lead.

Gudzak would add one more touchdown late, but the Lions held on for the win.

"We have a lot of work to do because the league we're in is tough," Vircillo said. "There are teams with explosive athletes and fine coaching."
