The spring high school sports season begins in earnest today as baseball and softball get under way.
The spring season is short - state championships in all sports will be concluded by the weekend of June 7-8.
While the season is short, it's hectic. In addition to baseball and softball, track and field, golf, boys tennis, lacrosse and crew teams are also in action.
And then there is the constant worrying about whether rain will postpone events.
The weather should be good enough for the season to start today. Here are three Marquee Matchups for opening day.
Vineland at Millville, 4 p.m.
This will be Millville's first game on the refurbished Mike Trout Field. These schools are rivals and expected to contend for the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference title. Vineland is the defending CAL American Division II champion.
Oakcrest at Atlantic City, 4 p.m.
This is a matchup of up-and-coming teams. It also features two of the CAL's top players - Sam Liepe of Oakcrest and Maddie Taggart of Atlantic City.
Millville at Ocean City, 4 p.m.
This is the season opener for both teams even though the lacrosse season began last week. Ocean City finished 15-4 last season, while Millville was 6-12.
