Holy Spirit High School senior Lauren Turner, 17, of Absecon, will continue her education and her rowing career at the University of Tulsa.

Holy Spirit High School senior rower Lauren Turner will continue her career at the University of Tulsa next year.

Turner committed to the NCAA Division I school in Oklahoma earlier this month and will receive a partial scholarship that's both academic and athletic. Turner, a 17-year-old Absecon resident, said she is second academically in her senior class.

Turner said that Tulsa coach Kevin Harris told her the scholarship could become full by the time she arrives as a freshman next year.

"I loved the whole atmosphere," Turner said of her visit to Tulsa, which was in late September. "There was a good balance with academics and athletics, and I felt that's where I belonged. I really liked the coach and the team, and that sealed the deal."

Turner was in seat-5 of the Holy Spirit girls second eight this past spring. The Spartans' crew was undefeated during the season until finishing second to James Madison High School at the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, and second to New Trier (Ill.) at the Nationals on the Cooper River in Camden.

Turner was a member of the varsity eight as a sophomore, and was in the freshman eight in her first year.

"Lauren has a great work ethic. She's a real go-getter," Holy Spirit girls crew coach Joe Welsh said. "Last year, she had our top erg score. She's a very strong kid."

Harris, the Tulsa coach, has an East Coast connection as he was the former coach at Yorktown High School (Va.)

"I've known Kevin for years," Welsh said. "We coached against each other, and we hit it off. He's a nice guy and he has a nice competitive program at Tulsa. It takes a lot for a kid to go to school that far away. That's what we're here for, to get the kids moving on (to college)."

Turner plans to major in psychology and political science.
