The 29th annual David J. Kerr Jr. Memorial Lifeguard Races will be held at 6:15 p.m. today at 35th Street beach in Avalon.

The Kerr Memorials is unique among beach patrol events because it emphasizes participation by several lifeguards on each team.

The races are the 1-mile doubles row, the -mile swim, the -mile singles row, the ironman relay and the surf dash. The ironman relay is a race with a swimmer, runner and rower on each team.

Each patrol can enter three doubles crews, three swimmers, three singles rowers, two ironman relay teams and two five-person surf dash teams.

The competing teams are Avalon, the defending champion, Stone Harbor, the 2010 winner, Sea Isle City, Wildwood Crest, Upper Township, Longport, Ventnor, Wildwood and North Wildwood.

The event honors the late Dave Kerr, an Avalon lifeguard who won a South Jersey Championship in the doubles row in 1980. Kerr died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 28.
