Hydroplane powerboat racing returns to Lake Lenape in Mays Landing on Saturday and Sunday with the 23rd annual Daniel J. Murphy Jr. Memorial Regatta.

Heats and finals will be held both days from noon to 5 p.m. on a mile oval on the lake.

The regatta has five hydroplane divisions, plus Jersey Speed Skiffs and pro stock ski boats. Each race is four laps.

The event is free, but a $10 event pass can be purchased at the race site on Park Road, which grants access to the pit area for both days.

Three area drivers who will be there are George Conover Sr. of Egg Harbor Township, who is also the race director, EHT's 19-year-old Tabatha Carr and Galloway Township's Warren Brown.

The event honors the late Dan Murphy, a hydroplane racer in the 1940s and 1950s who lived in Atlantic City and Longport.
