The Ocean City Beach Patrol goes for a sweep of the women's lifeguard competition season today in Ventnor.

Ocean City and 12 other patrols will compete in the South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs Association meet at the 19th annual Cape Atlantic Women's Lifeguard Invitational at 6:30 p.m. at Suffolk Avenue beach. Brigantine and Cape May Point will not participate.

O.C. won the team championship at the other two all-female lifeguard events, the Longport Women's Lifeguard Invitational on July 9 and the Ocean City Beach Patrol Women's Invitational on July 24. The Cape May Point Women's Lifeguard Challenge, the other event, is a triathlon rather than a regular lifeguard event.

Tonight's races are the doubles row, the swim, the singles row and the surf dash.

"Ocean City seems to have the best team. They have a lot of good athletes," Ventnor Beach Patrol captain Bill Howarth said. "But it's ocean racing and anything can happen."

Ocean City won the first two events last year, but lost to Atlantic City on the doubles row tiebreaker at the Cape Atlantic Women's event after both scored 12 points to lead the scoring. Cape May was the upset winner in 2011, and Ventnor won from 2006 to 2010.

Rachel Boudart and Holly Berenotto will row doubles for Ocean City today, while Lindsay Vallen and Alisia Bell will go for Sea Isle City. The Ocean City crew won at Longport, and Sea Isle took first at Ocean City.

Stone Harbor rookie Hayley Edwards will try to sweep the swim events. She won at Longport and Ocean City, and O.C. rookie Lexi Santer was second in both races.

The Wildwood Crest surf-dash team will try to complete its second straight unbeaten season. The Crest team of Ann Marie Kelly, Christina Caroulis, Leeny Tarnowski and Rose Brenner won all three races in 2012 and the first two this summer.

"It's impressive when a surf-dash team goes undefeated because there's no way to get a homefield advantage with the waves breaking," Howarth said. "Wildwood Crest is always right there."

Longport's Paige Funk won the singles row at her home event. The Ocean City Invitational didn't have a singles race.
