The Rutgers-Newark Univ-ersity men's basketball team gave Richard Stockton College its first loss of the season, beating the visiting Ospreys 54-49 in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday night.

Hussein Abdelmaksoud shot 8-for-10 from the field and led the Scarlet Raiders with 18 points. Abdelmaksoud also had a game-high nine rebounds.

Rutgers-Newark is 6-2 overall and 4-1 NJAC. Stockton is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Al'Don Muhammad and Christian Garcia scored 13 and 12 points respectively, for the winners. Darnell McCargo scored 13 points for Stockton, while Josh Blamon had 12 points, and Rameel Johnson added nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Richard Stockton College women's basketball: Rutgers-Newark University freshman guard Laura Shakiri led all scorers with 23 points as the host Scarlet Raiders topped Stockton 65-57 in an NJAC game. Rutgers-Newark, which hit 24-of-29 free throws overall, was up 32-23 at halftime.

Rutgers-Newark improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Stockton is 3-2 overall and 2-2 NJAC.

Stockton's Alex Nardoza led with 15 points and four assists, and Che'Na Thompson scored 13 points and added nine rebounds and three steals. Also for the Ospreys, Alexa Ryan had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Atlantic Cape Community men's basketball: Union County Community beat Atlantic Cape Community 75-63.

Jaylen Baytops scored 19 points for Union. For the Buccaneers, Armin Cane (Pleasantville) scored 17 points and had eight rebounds, and Cesar Sandoval (Absegami) scored 17 points and had five rebounds.

Cumberland County College women's basketball: Cumb-erland County beat visiting Sussex County Community College 66-28 in Vineland.

Kyra Lunsford (Vineland) led the Dukes (9-0) with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Shanece Howard (Bridgeton) added 13 points. Tess Elder (Sacred Heart) had eight points and eight rebounds for Cumberland, and Alicia Cox (Vineland) scored seven points and had seven rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals.

For Sussex, Monique Mastraolomenico scored 11 points.

Cumberland County College men's basketball: The host Dukes beat Sussex County Community 86-49 for their first win of the season.

Tyler Hillgrube (Buena Regional) led Cumberland (1-9) with 23 points, and had six rebounds and six assists.

Ricky Williford (Bridgeton) had 12 points and 17 rebounds, and Davonte Johnson (Millville) had 12 points and five blocks. Juwan Flowers (Vineland) added 10 points.

For Sussex (1-7), Devin Swinney scored 14 points.
