OF Matt Szczur (Lower Cape May Regional) and the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs) play the Birmingham Barons (White Sox) Thursday in the first game of a best-of-five Southern League playoff series. Szczur hit .281 (143-for-509) with 78 runs scored, 44 RBIs and 22 stolen bases on 34 attempts in 128 regular-season games.

OF Darren Ford (Vineland) and the Indianapolis Indians begin their triple-A International League best-of-five playoff series with the Durham Bulls (Rays) Wednesday. Ford hit .230 (55-for-239) with 19 RBIs, 36 runs scored and 29 stolen bases on 40 attempts in 83 regular-season games. He struck out 56 times, and his on-base percentage was .307. He hit seven doubles, two triples and two home runs.

RHP A.J. Holland (Holy Spirit) and the Lynchburg Hillcats will begin their Class-A Advanced Carolina League best-of-three playoff series with the Potomac Nationals on Wednesday. Holland finished the regular season 5-9 with a 4.80 ERA in 28 appearances, all but the last five of which were starts. In 120 innings, he allowed 130 hits, walked 59 and struck out 79.

LHP Scott DeCecco (Middle Township) finished 10-9 with a 4.26 ERA in 27 starts this season. He made 24 starts for the Clinton LumberKings in the single-A Midwest League before being promoted to the High Desert Mavericks (Mariners) in the Class-A Advanced California League. The left-hander went 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA in three starts after his promotion. In 150 innings overall, he gave up 153 hits, walked 46 and struck out 92.

RHP Darren Fischer (Cumberland Regional) went 0-3 with a 5.30 ERA in 12 relief appearances this season for the Princeton (W.Va.) Rays in the rookie-level Appalachian League. In 18 2-3 innings, he allowed 12 hits, walked seven and struck out 17.

Independent leagues (unaffiliated with MLB)

OF Alexi Colon (St. Augustine Prep) went 0-for-3 with a run scored for the Schaumburg (Ill.) Boomers in a 3-1 victory over the Juliet Slammers in the Frontier League on Tuesday. Colon, an outfielder, is hitting .258 with five home runs, 31 RBIs, five triples and 34 runs scored in 79 games. The Boomers’ regular season ends Thursday, and they open the playoffs with a best-of-five series Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.

RHP Charlie Law (Mainland Regional) went 3-4 with a 3.20 ERA in seven starts for the Rockland Boulders in the Can-Am League. In 39 1-3 innings, he gave up 39 hits, walked 28 and struck out 21.
