Senior defenseman Brolin Cruz kept Absegami High School's boys soccer season alive with the final goal in a shootout to beat visiting Washington Township 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the opening round of the South Jersey Group IV tournament Tuesday.

After two scoreless overtime periods, Absegami, the No. 8 seed, won the coin toss and elected to shoot second.

Ninth-seeded Washington Township missed chances to score on its third and fourth attempts, giving the Braves an edge going into the final round.

Payne Vazquez scored an unassisted goal from inside the 18-yard line in the 23rd minute to put Absegami on the board first.

Washington Township's Eric Jordan answered 10 minutes later to tie the game 1-1.

Absegami's Ryan Taylor recorded six saves in regulation and overtime.

The Braves will play at top-seeded Cherokee in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Girls volleyball

Southern Regional 2, Absegami 0

The third-seeded Southern Regional High School girls volleyball team swept No. 14 Absegami in the first round of the South Jersey Group IV playoffs Tuesday. Game scores were 25-14, 25-22.

For Southern, Alex Andriani recorded 16 assists, Alexa Comfort had 14 digs and Allison Lotz pounded 10 kills. The Rams improved to 24-6 and will host sixth-seeded Marlboro on Thursday.

Senior middle hitter Christina Monroe led Absegami (11-11) with eight kills, eight blocks and six digs. Senior setter Hailey Marr recorded 10 assists and five digs for the Braves.
