LOS ANGELES — UCLA freshman Kyle Anderson, a Cape May native, has been cleared by the NCAA to play basketball this season.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero said the school was told Wednesday that Anderson can play after the NCAA “found no evidence to substantiate claims of violations in his case.”

Anderson was being investigated for potential recruiting violations. The forward from Jersey City, N.J., who played for St. Anthony's, was among the nation’s top recruits last spring.

Still unresolved is the status of freshman Shabazz Muhammad, another highly sought-after recruit who is the subject of an NCAA probe involving alleged improper benefits he received in his recruitment from boosters of his AAU program in Las Vegas and the alleged improper acceptance of airline flights for some of his recruiting visits. He chose UCLA over Kentucky and Duke.

The school has only said that Muhammad, his family and UCLA are working with the NCAA during the process.

“Haha hopefully I’m next so we can get this season going !!!!” Muhammad tweeted in response to the news on Anderson.

Muhammad had been practicing with the 13th-ranked Bruins until he strained his right shoulder last week. The guard is projected to be out two to four weeks, putting him in jeopardy of missing their season opener on Nov. 9 against Indiana State.
