The new guys
Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, the Eagles' first-round pick, returned to the team Monday afternoon. He had left Lehigh University on Friday to attend a funeral.
Wide receiver Marvin McNutt (sixth-round draft pick) had two nice catches, including a 50-yarder up the sideline against double coverage on a pass from Mike Kafka.
Running back Chris Polk (undrafted rookie) delivered one of the big hits of training camp. He sent blitzing cornerback Brandon Hughes flying with a block during the live scrimmage.
Position analysis: Offensive line
Returning players: Center Jason Kelce (starter), guards Evan Mathis and Danny Watkins (starters), tackles Todd Herremans (starter) and Jason Peters (injured starter), tackle King Dunlap, guard Dallas Reynolds, center Julian Vandervelde.
Newcomers: Tackle Demetress Bell (starter, free agent), center/
guard Mike Gibson (free agent), tackle D.J. Jones (free agent), tackle Dennis Kelly (draft pick), guard Alfred McCullough (rookie free agent), center/guard Steve Vallos (free agent), tackle Thomas Welch (free agent), guard Brandon Washington (draft pick).
Outlook: The line's success depends on how well Bell plays in place of Peters, the five-time Pro Bowler who will miss at least the first half of the season with a ruptured Achilles' tendon. Bell was picked up from Buffalo to replace Peters at left tackle. Watkins should be much better after a slow start to his rookie season. Kelce and Mathis both are close to Pro Bowl-level players. Herremans has jumped around the line but appears settled at right tackle.
If the season started today
The Eagles would be without three starters on the defensive line. Ends Trent Cole (strained shoulder) and Jason Babin (strained calf) remained sidelined with injuries Monday. Tackle Mike Patterson (brain surgery) will be out the entire camp. Only tackle Cullen Jenkins is available to play.
Play of the day
Running back LeSean McCoy challenged safety Kurt Coleman in the pass blocking drills and then proceeded to stop him in his tracks while talking trash. Coleman rebounded with two interceptions later in practice.
What they're saying
Herremans, on Andy Reid's speech to the team Sunday: "I already had mountains of respect for Andy and his family, but coming in and addressing the team, and feeling that he had to, just put more and more respect up there for me. I can't even describe how much I respect the man. He is a strong individual."
Bumps and bruises
Wide receivers Jamel Hamler (strained hamstring) and Jeremy Maclin (cramps) both left practice early.
Safety Nate Allen (strained hamstring), Babin, tight end Brent Celek (sprained knee), Cole, and linebacker Jamar Chaney (strained hamstring) did limited work.
Cornerback Cliff Harris (sprained ankle) and Washington (concussion) did not practice.
The Eagles signed free-agent linebacker Adrian Moten to a one-year deal. Moten previously played for Indianapolis and Seattle.
They also signed free-agent defensive end Xavier Brown on Saturday. Brown just finished a season in the Arena Football League with the New Orleans Voodoo.
Today at camp
The Eagles have a scheduled day off. Most of the team is expected to attend the funeral services for Garrett Reid in Broomall, Pa.
