In a somewhat surprising move, the Philadelphia Eagles released punter Chas Henry on Tuesday and re-signed Mat McBriar to a two-year deal.
McBriar had been competing with Henry in the preseason for the starting job, but was released in the final round of cuts.
Henry, 23, set an Eagles record in the Week 1 game against the Browns, averaging 55 yards on six punts with a net of 42.
But his net average dropped to 32.4 and 38.8 in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively.Â
McBriar, 33, was a Pro Bowler and All-Pro in 2006 and 2010 and will also be the holder for place-kicker Alex Henery.
The Eagles also signed tight end/long snapper Kyle Nelson to the practice squad. The team's long snapper, Jon Dorenbos, suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to Arizona.
Wide receiver Jeremy Ebert was released from the practice squad to make room for Nelson.
