The Ladies Invitational Bluefish Tournament was canceled this year because of small-crafts warnings this weekend. But the tournament was not a total wipe-out.
According to tournament director Kim Kirk, a check for $33,000 was turned over to AtlanticCare at the awards banquet Sunday night at the Grand Ballroom in the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City. The funds help keep the mobile Ruth Newman Shapiro Mobile Mammograph Unit rolling to provide mammograms for unisured women.
The contest — originally scheduled for Saturday and postponed to Sunday before being called off — had 35 captains and boats registered.
Offshore big-game fishing is excellent when the sportishing craft can get out.
Brennan Marine in Northfield reported that at least one boat made it to inside the tip of Baltimore Canyon on Saturday. Bob Miller and crew of Outrage trolled ballyho covered with Ilander skirts or uncovered and spreader bars and daisy chains and caught seven yellowfin tuna to 70 pounds and five mahi between 10 and 15 pounds. Brennan’s reported that the Outrage crew said it was fishable despite the small crafts.
