Tuna trolling moved in to Barnegat Ridge for those who would be more comfortable inshore rather than journey off to the deep of the canyons.
The Hi-Flier charter/open boat got into them on Thursday. Capt. Dave DeGennaro said high-speed trolling with 3-4 inch cedar plugs and squid daisy chains slammed 10 bonito weighing 2-4 pounds.
DeGennaro said Friday that his 11-year-old son Max caught his first bonito. Max is an 6th-grader at Brackman Middle School in Barnegat.
DeGennaro said to look for the visuals - "slicks and chicks" - and throttle up to 7 miles per hour to minimize attacks of small bluefish. He was fishing 15 miles off Barnegat Inlet on North Ridge.
Hi-Flier Sportfishing is headquartered at Sun Harbor Bay Club in Waretown. DeGennaro has charter/open trips scheduled for this weekend. Call 732-330-5674.
DeGennaro said you can do anything to prepare bonito that you can do with other tunas. He reported he prefers sashimi or seared.
