79-pound white marlin earns biggest prize at Mid-Atlantic $500,000

Robert Warder of Parkton, Md., aboard Reelentless was the big winner as the final results of the five-day Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Marlin & Tuna Tournament, based in Cape May, were released Saturday.

Warder's 79-pound white marlin on Tuesday, the second day of the tournament, won the Heaviest White Marlin award for the top prize of $667,369.

Wade Lober of Ocean City, Md., aboard Why Knot, landed a 416-pound blue marlin Tuesday and swept the top three places of the Heaviest Blue Marlin division to win $309,503. No other qualifying blue marlins over the 400-pound minimum weight were weighed.

Anthony Matarese of Ocean City, Md., aboard Reel Chaos, landed a 233-pound big eye tuna Tuesday and won the Heaviest Tuna award and $178,533.

Heaviest White Marlin-1. 79 pounds, Reelentless, Robert Warder, Parkton, Md., $667, 359; 2. 78 pounds, Sea Slammer, Richard McCann, West Chester, Pa., $115,793; 3. 75 pounds, Game Over, Tom Perry, Pasadena, Md., $46,556.

Heaviest Blue Marlin-1. 416 pounds, Why Not, Wade Lober, Ocean City, Md., $309,503. No other qualifying blue marlin were caught, so the second and third prize money was awarded to Lober.

Heaviest Tuna-1. 233 pounds, Reel Chaos, Anthony Matarese, Ocean City, Md., $178,553; 2. 224 pounds, Miss Annie, Barry Weshnak, Singer Island, Fla., $115,413; 3. 217, Irish Twin, Tom Ely, Franklin Lakes, $67,021.

Heaviest Dolphin-1. 43 pounds, Moore Bills, Don Pyle, Annapolis, Md., $9,440.

Heaviest Wahoo-1. 42 pounds, Krazy Salts, Dave Anderson, Medford, $9,440.

The following received calcutta money for various positions on the leaderboard during the week with the species noted, though they did not receive tournament proceeds: 70 pounds white marlin, Tighten Up, Rusty Palmer, Berlin, Md., $24,025; 72 pounds white marlin, Flying Label, Dean Shacklett, Blue Bell, Pa., $20,257; 70 pounds white marlin, Reelin' Feelin', Adam Youschak, Wildwood, $15,174; 67 pounds white marlin, Motivation, Chris Lepping, Cape May, $8,851; 213 pounds tuna, Trasea Ann, Walter Harmstead, Manasquan, $8,851.

Final point standings

White Marlin-1. 1,050, Canyon Lady, James Diller, Stone Harbor; 2. 900, Liquidity, Dave Shockley, Wilmington, Del.; 3. 895, Reelin' Feelin', Adam Youschak, Wildwood.

Blue Marlin-1. 300, Pumpin' Hard 66, Dan Burt, Salisbury, Md.; 2. 300, Fishing Doc, Ken Chern, Point Pleasant (Point ties were broken based on time of catch.); 3. 300, Game Over, Tom Perry, Pasadena, Md.

Tuna-1. 463, Miss Annie, Barry Weshnak, Singer Island, Fla.; 2. 432, Hubris, Damien Romeo, Forked River; 3. 424.5, Trasea Ann, Walter Harmstead, Manasquan.
