The American Power Boat Association-Region 3 recognized longtime Press of Atlantic City sports reporter Guy Gargan as this year’s Tom Kelly Award winner.

Gargan, who has been covering the powerboat races for more than 20 years, is the fourth person to receive the award since the passing of Kelly, one of Region 3’s longtime circuit photographers. Recipients are chosen for their contribution and promotion of the sport through journalism or photography.

Region 3 consists of New Jersey, Eastern Penn-sylvania, Delaware, Southern New York State and a portion of Connecticut. There are 12 different regions throughout the country.

Gargan, a 58-year old Ocean City resident, will be presented with the award at the APBA Region 3 inboard awards banquet on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Mt. Laurel Hotel on Route 73.

“I’m really honored to receive the award, and I always enjoy covering the races,” Gargan said.

“The boat-racing folks are some of my favorite people in sports.”

Gargan is mostly known for his reporting of the Daniel J. Murphy Memorial Regatta on Lake Lenape in Mays Landing and The Wildwoods New Jersey Governor’s Cup Hydrofest on Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest.

Warren Brown, one of the inboard directors of Region 3, said he has known Gargan for 10 years.

Brown was one of the directors who helped choose Gargan for the award.

Brown is also a race-boat owner, competitor and Atlantic City beach patrol captain.

“At these events for the competitors, the referees and all the organizers, it’s organized chaos.

“But Guy is always there with his pad in your face getting the information and getting it correctly with the correct spelling,” Brown said. “He’s a cool guy.

“He really is. If he can’t get to you right then and there, he’ll wait until he can get to you. It’s an attribute that not all media (members) have.

“He’s very patient and very thorough with what he does.”

“If he gets to the Mays Landing race early enough next year, we might give him a ride in one of the boats.”
