Mark McCormick, the 49-year-old pro from Suburban Golf Club in Union, played better in the second round of the U.S. Open on Friday but mailed to make the cut.

The Middletown resident, who opened with a 12-over-par 82 at The Olympic Club’s Lake Course in San Francisco on Thursday, improved by five strokes to finish at 159, missing the cut by 11 strokes.

He had two birdies, seven bogeys and one double bogey Friday. McCormick hit 13-of-36 greens in regulation (36.11 percent) and 7-of-27 fairways (25 percent).

McCormick qualified for the Open on his 25th try, earning a spot in the national championship last week at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summitt. In a practice round Tuesday, McCormick wore a New York Giants football cap.
