After two years as an assistant coach at Buena Regional High School, Andrew Mack is taking over the reins of the boys basketball team.

A Buena graduate in 2003, Mack will take over a Chiefs team that won just six games last season. Despite that fact, he's excited at the opportunity.

"It's been a very exciting time for me," Mack said. "I've been anxious for this moment. I have a lot of help. I have a lot of good guys around me.

"I've always had people that I know I can go to and get advice from and pick their brain since they're in a 'been here, done that' type of deal."

Buena graduated it's leading scorer, Trayvond Barbary, and 6-foot-7 center Darryl Guilford. Mack said it's not going to be easy to replace either guy.

"We have a couple of guys that got a lot of playing experience last season even with those guys being here," Mack said. "For the most part, a lot of our younger kids got the opportunity to play last year. I'm expecting those guys to step into those roles and fill those shoes. "

The Chiefs are returning 6-4 junior Jordan Atkins, who is expected to be "a pretty big asset," Mack said.

Mahkvan Singh is another key returning player. A captain last season as a junior, Singh will be Buena's leader on and off the court.

They're also adding a transfer from Sacred Heart in senior Shawn Augusto.
