Qualifying for a final at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia is a challenge, but four area high school crews did that Friday on the opening day of the 91st annual event.
Sixteen others will race in semifinals with a chance to make finals.
The Ocean City girls freshman eight and the Egg Harbor Township girls junior four won semifinal heats after finishing second in their preliminary head races on the Schuylkill River.
The O.C. crew won its semifinal in 5 minutes, 30.61 seconds. The EHT crew took its semifinal in 5:59.26.
The Holy Spirit boys double finished fifth in its head race and third in its semifinal in 5:43.56 to make the final. The O.C. girls lightweight eight was in a smaller, 11-boat division, and it reached the final with a fifth-place finish in 5:49.65 in the head race.
Head races were held in 30 divisions Friday, and semifinals were held in nine divisions. Racing at the two-day regatta, the nation’s oldest and largest for high school rowers, will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday with more semifinals. Finals in the 30 divisions will begin at 1 p.m.
