Santiago can be one of CAL's best

Egg Harbor Township's Trey Jones #4 attempts a shot between Pleasantville's Hussein Calloway #11

The Egg Harbor Township High School girls basketball team returns one of the Cape-Atlantic League's leading scorers in Selena Santiago.

That's not the only good news for the Eagles. Plenty of other talented players return from last season's 15-9 team.

"The good thing (about many returnees) is chemistry," EHT coach Karen Shutz said. "They've played together at least one year. They know our expectations and the goals of our program."

Santiago, a 5-foot-6 senior point guard, averaged 15.4 points last season and also had 99 steals. She is 220 points away from 1,000 career points.

"I expect here to have an even bigger year this year," Shutz said of Santiago. "Everything goes through her. She is an extension of the coaching staff on the floor."

The Eagles also return senior guard Eryn Reed, a tough, physical player who is one of the CAL's top defenders.

"You can put her out on the other team's best player," Shutz said. "She can play guard. She can play forward. She's a great rebounder from the guard spot."

The Eagles must overcome a lack of height. EHT also plays in the Cape-Atlantic League American Division, which is one of the league's toughest divisions with Holy Spirit, Atlantic City and Millville among the contenders.

"I know (the division) will be tougher than last year because everybody pretty much brings back their key players," Shutz said. "We just have a one-game-at-a-time mentality."
