Audrey Carter huddles with her Bridgeton High School girls basketball team during a game last month. The Bulldogs went 7-17 in their first year with Carter as their coach, an improvement from their 4-22 the previous season.

Motivation is not something the Bridgeton High School girls basketball team lacks.

This year, neither is experience. The Bulldogs return all of its key players and welcome some new additions.

In her second season at Bridgeton, coach Audrey Carter said her squad will benefit from quickness and teamwork. The Bulldogs do not rely on one playmaker and will see contributions from everyone on the floor.

"They're hungry. They're eager to be better and they just want to play," Carter said.

Bridgeton's team has struggled in the past but steadily has improved. After winning just four games in 2010-11, the Bulldogs won seven in Carter's first season. She expects the upward trend to continue.

Carter would like to see the team get off to a quicker start than a year ago. The Bulldogs have the benefit of playing six of their first seven games at home.

Senior guard Jovan Childers highlights Bridgeton's returnees. Childers, who scored 12.4 points per game last season, is a three-sport student with remarkable athleticism.

The Bulldogs may surprise teams this winter.

"We basically want to be a contender against teams that don't think we should be," Carter said. "We're out to prove some people wrong.
