Buena at Pleasantville Football

Pleasantville High School football coach Chris Sacco hopes to lead the Greyhounds to a 2-0 mark to start the season on Friday night when they host Riverside. That would be Pleasantville’s best start since 2003.

The Pleasantville High School football team will try to start the season Friday night with consecutive wins for the first time since 2003.

The Greyhounds (1-0) host Riverside (0-2) at 6 p.m. in a West Jersey Football League interdivision game. Pleasantville was off last week after opening the season with a 13-7 overtime win over Buena Regional.

Mohamed Toure ran for 72 yards against Buena and scored the winning touchdown when he recovered a fumble and sprinted 97 yards for a touchdown. Riverside comes off a 37-0 loss to Schalick.

Pleasantville hasn’t been 2-0 since 2003. The Greyhounds opened that season with wins over Holy Spirit and St. Augustine Prep. Pleasantville finished 7-4 that year for their last winning season.

What follows is a preview of the rest of this weekend’s games.

West Jersey Football League

Continental Division

Atlantic City (1-1) at Bridgeton (1-2)

7 p.m. Friday

Robert Saunders scored the winning touchdown on a 35-yard, fourth-quarter to lead Bridgeton past Clearview 12-6 last Friday. Atlantic City senior wide receiver/quarterback Nazim Derry has 153 rushing yards and 118 receiving yards. He has thrown for three touchdowns and rushed for another score.

Vineland (2-0) at Egg Harbor Township (0-2)

7 p.m. Saturday (1440 AM)

Vineland is No. 3 in The Press Elite 11. Fighting Clan quarterback Isaih Pacheco has thrown for 288 yards and a touchdown and run for 237 yards and four touchdowns. EHT senior wide receiver Matt Princz has four catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Independence Division

St. Joseph (2-0) at Absegami (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday (101.3 FM)

St. Joe is No. 7 in The Elite 11. The Wildcats are averaging 311 rushing yards per game. Freshman linebacker Angelo Vokolos has made 22 tackles, four of them for losses. Absegami comes off a 49-6 win over Lower Cape May Regional. Braves wide receiver Josh Coursey has caught seven passes for 175 yards and a touchdown this season.

Mainland Regional (0-2) at Oakcrest (0-2)

6 p.m. Friday

Mainland running back Kobe Roberts has rushed 34 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. Oakcrest quarterback Nico Conti has thrown two touchdown passes. Mainland coach Chuck Smith was the head coach at Oakcrest from 2010-15.

Ocean City (1-0) at Cedar Creek (2-0)

1 p.m. Saturday (106.3 FM)

Ocean City was off last week after opening the season with a 26-6 win over Oakcrest. Red Raiders quarterback Harry Pfeifle ran for 124 yards in the win. Cedar Creek quarterback Louie Barrios has thrown for 357 yards and two touchdowns. Cedar Creek lost to Delsea Regional 28-20 last week, but Delsea had to forfeit because it used an ineligible player.

United Division

Holy Spirit (1-1) at Lower Cape May Regional (0-2)

7 p.m. Saturday

Spirit is No. 8 in The Elite 11 but comes off a 42-26 loss to St. Joseph. Spartans quarterback Josh Zamot has thrown four touchdown passes. Brennan Ray scored Lower’s lone touchdown on a 15-yard run in a 49-6 loss to Absegami last Friday.

Buena Regional (1-1) at Middle Township (2-1)

6 p.m. Friday (98.7 FM)

It’s still early but the winner will get a boost toward the playoffs. Shawn Rice ran for 154 yards and a touchdown as Buena edged Oakcrest 22-20 last Friday. Senior linebacker Gary Nagle leads the Middle defense with 25 tackles. Buena has won four straight against Middle, including a 25-6 victory last season.

American Division

Hammonton (2-1) at Williamstown (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday

Hammonton running back Sean Ryker averages 5.4 yards per carry. Junior linebacker Kevin Vandever leads the Blue Devils’ defense. Williamstown comes off a 45-7 loss to St. Augustine Prep.

Royal Division

Triton Regional (1-1) at Cumberland Regional (0-2)

6 p.m. Friday

Cumberland quarterback Ta’quan Green has thrown for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Triton beat Pennsauken 51-40 last week.

Classic Division

Wildwood (0-2) at Gloucester (2-1)

7 p.m. Friday

Christian Tyson threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nate Lopez for Wildwood’s only score in a 43-6 loss to Haddon Township last Friday. Gloucester quarterback Nate Kidd has thrown for 367 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Shore Conference

Lacey Township (1-1) at Pinelands Regional (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday

Lacey running back Jason Giresi has rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Pinelands counters with Evan Burton, who has rushed 38 times for 407 yards and five touchdowns. Lacey beat Pinelands 16-8 last season.

Southern Regional (1-2) at Toms River East (0-2)

7 p.m. Friday

Southern averages 215.3 rushing yards per game. Junior running back and linebacker Joe Miele has scored four touchdowns. Matt Barnett averages 7.8 yards per carry. Both Southern and Toms River East have lost in overtime to Central Regional this season.

Barnegat (2-0) at Manchester Township (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday

Barnegat tight end Sean Morris has caught 11 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He’s also made six tackles for losses at linebacker. Manchester running back Jalen Green has rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns.
