The Ocean City High School football team can take a step toward its first playoff appearance in nine years Friday night.

The Red Raiders (3-1) play at Middle Township (3-3) at 6 p.m. in West Jersey Football league interdivision matchup of Cape May County rivals. The game will be broadcast on 106.3 FM.

Ocean City last qualified for the South Jersey Group III playoffs in 2008, losing to Lacey Township 6-0 in the first round.

The Red Raiders begin this week ranked fifth in the South Jersey Group III power point standings. The top eight teams with the most power points in each enrollment group qualify for the postseason, which starts Nov. 10. Teams earn power points based on wins and their opponents’ records.

Middle Township (3-3) is also in contention for a South Jersey Group II playoff berth.

Senior quarterback Harry Pfeifle (seven rushing touchdowns, and 430 rushing yards) leads the Red Raiders. Ocean City junior defensive lineman Austin Green has made 10.5 tackles for losses.

Middle quarterback Cameron Hamer has thrown for 390 yards and rushed for 388 yards.

What follows is a preview of the rest of this weekend’s games involving teams from Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Ocean counties.

West Jersey Football League


Cedar Creek (4-1) at Buena Regional (3-2)

6 p.m. Friday

Sophomore quarterback Louie Barrios and junior running back Kamal Reed each ran for two touchdowns as Cedar Creek beat Mainland Regional 35-0 last Friday. Buena comes off a 35-0 loss to Highland Regional. Buena running back Shawn Rice has rushed 69 times for 438 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hammonton (2-3) at Millville (4-0)

6 p.m. Friday

Millville is No. 1 in The Elite 11. Thunderbolts quarterback E.J. Nichols has thrown for 458 yards and eight touchdowns. Hammonton has dropped three straight but would revitalize its season with a win.

Wildwood (0-5) at Pleasantville (3-1)

6 p.m. Friday

Pleasantville is seeking its first winning season since 2003. The Greyhounds come off a 36-24 loss to Holy Spirit. Pleasantville running back/linebacker Mohamed Toure has rushed for 329 yards and three touchdowns and made a team-high 40 tackles. Wildwood lost to Gloucester Catholic 61-8 last Saturday.

St. Joseph (5-0) at Allentown (4-1)

7 p.m. Friday

St. Joe is No. 5 in The Press Elite 11 and has allowed just 29 points all season. The Wildcats have not allowed a touchdown in 14 quarters. Sophomore Jada Byers has returned three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns.

Allentown has won three straight, including a 48-8 victory over Pemberton last week. Quarterback Dan Merkel has completed 54 of 93 passes for 1,183 yards and 12 touchdowns. Allentown is the defending Central Jersey Group IV champion. St. Joe beat Allentown 37-19 last season.

Absegami (1-4) at Triton Regional (2-2)

7 p.m. Friday

Absegami wide receiver Josh Coursey has caught 25 passes for 337 yards and a touchdown. Triton running back Gian Liccketto has rushed 52 times for 581 yards and nine touchdowns.

Mainland Regional (1-3) at Bridgeton (1-4)

7 p.m. Friday

Mainland relies on the running of quarterback Kobe Roberts. Bridgeton running back Robert Saunders ran for 63 yards and a touchdown in the Bulldogs’ 45-6 loss to St. Augustine last week.

Oakcrest (0-5) at Lower Cape May Regional (1-3)

7 p.m. Friday

Oakcrest linebacker Dominique Daniel has made 46 tackles and recovered two fumbles. Lower quarterback Brennan Ray has rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

Washington Township (0-4) at Egg Harbor Township (0-4)

7 p.m. Friday (101.3 FM)

Egg Harbor Township’s four losses are to teams with a combined record of 14-2. EHT quarterback Saladin Paschall has thrown for 343 yards and three touchdowns. Washington Township coach Lamont Robinson was Millville’s defensive coordinator last season.

Atlantic City (3-1) at Williamstown (2-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday

Atlantic City has won three straight and needs a win to boost its South Jersey Group V playoff hopes. Vikings quarterback/wide receiver Nazim Derry has thrown for five touchdowns and run for three scores. Wide receiver Nah’Sir Morgan has six touchdown catches. Williamstown quarterback Jonathan Collins has thrown for more than 400 yards and three touchdowns.

Clearview Regional (0-4) at Vineland (4-0)

2 p.m. Saturday (1440-AM)

Vineland is No. 3 in The Elite 11. Rutgers-bound Isaih Pacheco has rushed for 616 yards and eight touchdowns. Clearview hasn’t scored more than seven points in any of its four defeats.

Shore Conference

Southern Regional (1-4) at Brick Township (4-1)

7 p.m. Friday

Southern rushes for an average of 194.6 yards per game. Senior linebacker Joe Miele leads the defense with 26 tackles and two sacks. Brick has two shutouts this season, including last week’s 28-0 win over Toms River South.

Barnegat (4-1) at Lacey Township (3-2)

1 p.m. Saturday

Barnegat tight end Sean Morris has caught 21 passes for 416 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also made 11 tackles for losses at linebacker. Lacey quarterback Coleton Klaus has thrown for 830 yards and five touchdowns.
