Another Holden is emerging at Lower Cape May Regional High School.

Sophomore Lauren Holden, whose family has been heavily involved with Caper Tigers sports for years, is expected to be one of the Cape-Atlantic League's top girls basketball players this season. She was a third-team Press All-Star as a freshman.

"She's very quick, can create her own shot," Lower coach Scott Douglass said of his 5-foot-6 point guard.

"She's worked on her jump shot. Her on-the-ball pressure is unbelievable, probably the best in the league. ... This is my fifth year, and she sees the basketball floor better than probably anybody we've had."

Holden's father, Pat, and uncle, Scott, both played basketball for Lower.

Those two and her grandfather, George, all have coached the boys basketball team, with Scott still holding that job. And Lauren's cousin, Rebecca Holden, starred in field hockey and softball.

"I definitely think it's something I embrace," Lauren said of the family tradition. "It's not like I'm pressured by them to maybe do as well as they did or anything like that. I definitely look up to them and strive to be like them."

The Caper Tigers have four starters back from a team that went 14-13 and almost upset top-seeded Delsea Regional in the second round of the playoffs. Douglass said he hopes to make the CAL tournament this season.
