The Buena Regional High School girls basketball team only returns two players with significant varsity minutes, said new coach Andrew Caldwell.

Caldwell will rely on guards Lynn Brown and Alaina Seyler.

"They will be the motor that runs the team," he said.

Buena has a lot of juniors and seniors, but most of them had junior varsity experience last year. So despite their ages, their lack of varsity playing time may be a factor this year.

Not only is Caldwell the Chiefs' new coach, this is also his first year coaching high school basketball. He's also a girls soccer assistant and head coach of the boys tennis team.

"(The older players) let me know some of the stuff they did last year (under former coach Misty Russo) and we're going to use some of that stuff along with the new stuff I'm bringing in," Caldwell said. "I'm hoping that their maturity and the fact they've played in the program for two to three years will provide for a smoother transition ."

Caldwell got to see his team play a few times last year when he was a teacher. The one thing he noticed was how hard they worked. He said that's continued this season.

"I just want to keep that up," Caldwell said. "I want to make sure we keep improving every day and I get back some effort so I can hopefully help them reach their potential as a team and as individuals."

Inexperience aside, Buena has a very athletic team, Caldwell said.

"All of our girls are at least two-sport athletes if not three-sport athletes, and we're going to try and use that to our advantage.
