From Press staff reports
The Atlantic City High School boys swimming team won its third straight meet Monday, beating visiting Vineland 98-88 in a Cape-Atlantic League American Conference contest between teams ranked in The Press Elite 11.
Thien Le won the 100-meter backstroke for his second individual win of the day. Earlier, he won the 50 freestyle a personal-best 25.35 seconds.
After Le's second win, Carson Rau came from behind to take the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 16.35 seconds, helping the Vikings seal the victory.
Atlantic City is No. 10 in the Elite 11, while Vineland is No. 11.
"Everyone stepped up across the board and swam well," Atlantic City coach Dave Demarest said by phone. "As a team, they swam as hard as they could. Vineland is a really good team, and we were surprised to win.
"Our goal at the end of the season is the playoffs, and we've been working really hard all season to be good at the end."
Atlantic City widened the gap after the diving event, won by Logan McHenry, but Vineland narrowed the deficit by winning the 200 freestyle relay. The Fighting Clan touched second and third in the following two events to stay close.
But even Vineland's victory in the 400 freestyle relay by Mike Ruberti, Mark Novatorskiy, Tylar Warfle and Damian Smith wasn't enough to overcome Atlantic City's depth.
The Vikings' A and B relay teams touched second and third to clinch the win.
