The Tri-Cape softball team rebounded from an opening-game loss to win twice in the annual Carpenter Cup Classic in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
The Carpenter Cup is a double-elimination tournament sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies that features all-star teams from high schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The Tri-Cape team is comprised of players from the Tri-County Conference and the Cape-Atlantic League who were sophomores or juniors during the recent school year.
Suburban-One Bicenten-nial beat Tri-Cape 4-1 in a 9 a.m. game. Selena Santiago of Egg Harbor Township High School knocked in Tri-Cape’s lone run in the second inning.
Tri-Cape responded with back-to-back wins over Inter-Ac and Delaware North. Santiago hit an RBI single for Tri-Cape in a 4-1 win over Inter-Ac. Wildwood Catholic’s Jackie DeLong allowed one run and struck out five in three innings.
Tri-Cape’s offense came alive during a 15-4 rout of Delaware North. Sacred Heart’s Danielle Lugo was 5-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs.
Tri-Cape plays Delaware County at 11 a.m. today at FDR Park in Philadelphia. The winner of that game will move on to play Chester County at 1 p.m. The loser will be eliminated.
