BRIDGETON — Claudine Smith doesn’t believe in down time.

Thursday afternoon unfolded just as Smith likes — nice and busy.

The Atlantic City High School junior hustled from event to event and won three titles at the Cape-Atlantic League individual track and field championships. Smith finished first in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. Just for good measure, she took third in the 100 dash out of an unseeded heat.

“I like staying busy,” she said. “I’m used to doing four events, because when I grew up doing gymnastics, that was four events going back and forth. I’m used to it.”

Smith’s performance highlighted several outstanding efforts by athletes during the meet, which was held in wet conditions at Bridgeton. Brielle Smith of Oakcrest turned in the meet’s best performance when she won the javelin with a throw of 151 feet, 3 inches — a personal record and the best throw in the state this spring.

There were several multiple winners of individual events.

Lauren Princz of Egg Harbor Township (100 and 200 dashes); Alyssa Aldridge of Mainland Regional (1,600 and 3,200 runs); and Alexis Harrison of Millville (shot put and discus) each won two events.

On the boys side, Charles Fields of Wildwood Catholic (100 and 200 dashes), Rakim Coyle of Wildwood Catholic (long jump and triple jump), and Quentin Bundy of Pleasantville (800 run and 400 hurdles) were also dual winners.

But no one at the meet had more individual success than Claudine Smith. She also won the same three events at last week’s Atlantic County championships.

“It’s an amazing feeling to repeat what I did at the county (meet),” she said. Claudine’s best performance came in the long jump, where she won with a leap of 18 feet, 0.25 inches.

“I’m most proud of the long jump,” she said. “It’s good to jump 18 feet. The last time I did that was at a dual meet (earlier this spring). It’s good to be back up there, and I’m hoping to jump 19 feet by the end of the season.”

Top sprinters

Princz and Fields left no doubt about who the fastest sprinters in the CAL are.

Fields won the boys 100 and 200 dashes.

Princz did the same for the girls.

Fields, a Wildwood Catholic senior, ran personal-bests in the 100 (10.81 seconds) and 200 (21.76).

“I’m excited,” Fields said. “The 200 was tougher. I was in lane two, and I was (behind) on the curve. I had to catch up to everybody.”

While Fields’ high school career is winding down, Thursday’s CAL titles should be the first of many for Princz.

The EHT freshman was timed at 24.10 in the 200 — the fastest mark in the state this spring. But the automatic timing machine did not immediately register the starter’s gun. EHT coaches hand-timed Princz at 24:43 — still a personal best.

Harrison recovers

Thursday’s wet conditions bothered Harrison. The Millville senior slipped in the discus circle during warmups.

“I had to play it easy after that,” she said with a laugh. “I didn’t want to fall again.”

Harrison recovered from the mishap to win the discus with a throw of 114-9 and shot put with a distance of 36-6. Both distances are CAL-bests this spring.

“I just had to stay focus,” Harrison said. “You have to come out here and do your best even though it’s raining. Everybody is going through the same thing.”

Bundy rolls in 800

Bundy didn’t leave anything to chance in the 800 run.

The Pleasantville junior went right to the lead and won easily in 1:56.25.

“I had to seal my spot,” Bundy said. “I didn’t want to get in the back (of the pack). If that happened, I might not have made it.”

Earlier in the meet, Bundy won the 400 hurdles — an event he just began this season — in a personal-best 55.84 seconds.

“It’s hard work and dedication all the way through,” Bundy said. “That’s really all I have to say.”
