WILDWOOD — The Sea Isle City Beach Patrol scored in four of five events to claim victory at the 48th annual Frank “Dutch” Hoffman Memorial Lifeguard Championships on the Lincoln Avenue beach Monday.

Sea Isle scored 14 points to enjoy a comfortable five-point victory over Margate, which finished second on a tiebreaker over Avalon. All 15 beach patrols in the South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs’ Association competed. Scoring was done on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis for first through fifth places.

But while Sea Isle enjoyed the team championship, much of the buzz surrounding the proceedings centered on Ocean City lifeguard Maggie Wallace. She won the swim race against a strong field of competitors to become the first female lifeguard to win a coed event in the history of the “Big Three” lifeguard races. The Big Three include the Hoffman race, this Friday’s Margate Memorials and next week’s South Jersey Championships.
